Tate Modern Holds World’s Most Expensive Painting
Picasso in London
London’s Tate Modern museum is displaying for the first time, Pablo Picasso’s Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur (translated as Nude, Green Leaves and Bust) which was made in 1932.
This painting was part of a colorful explosion of works painted in January 1932 in anticipation of the major retrospective that he was planning. The nude in question is Picasso’s sometime mistress Marie-Therese Walter who became the subject of many pieces by the spanish painter. Sold at 106.5 million dollars Pablo Picasso’s “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust”, is known to be the world’s most expensive original painting to date.
Tate's director, Sir Nicholas Serota, welcomed the loan. He said: "This is an outstanding painting by Picasso and I am delighted that through the generosity of the lender we are able to bring it to the British public for the first time.“
The painting is being showcased for the first time since 1961 and is on display for the people to see and admire in the Poetry and Dream wing on Level 3 of the gallery. A major exhibition of Picasso’s work will open at Tate Britain next year.
